ABCTE Partners with DANTES to Offer Teacher Certification Services to Military Personnel

WASHINGTON, DC (November 14, 2005) — The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence today announced it has teamed with the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), an agency of the Department of Defense, to offer testing services worldwide to military personnel.

Individuals in the military pursuing a career in teaching with Passport to TeachingSM can now prepare for and take their certification examinations in secure Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide. To earn certification candidates must demonstrate mastery on the computer-based Professional Teaching Knowledge examination and a subject area examination.

The American Board’s Passport to Teaching program is a premier national certification option, considered a breakthrough solution for highly knowledgeable career changers. Individuals with bachelor’s degrees can earn certification by demonstrating mastery on subject area and Professional Teaching Knowledge examinations and pass a background check. Passport to Teaching offers an individualized preparation process ideal for transitioning members of the military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, military retirees and military spouses.

“We are excited to work with DANTES because our partnership provides greater access to military personnel who want to pursue a career in teaching.,” said American Board acting CEO, David W. Saba.  “Partnering with military organizations has been a success; in fact, one study indicated that 90% of principals thought troops to teachers was amazing.”

"It is DANTES’ pleasure to work with the American Board because it directly supports the Troops to Teachers Program.  We encourage military members interested in obtaining information on ABCTE to visit the Certification section on the DANTES Web site: http://www.dantes.doded.mil," said Sandra Winborne, Manager, DANTES Certification Program.

The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence has also teamed with Military.com, the largest online military destination, to provide information about teaching careers.Military.com members can prepare for their certification at home or on base using preparation materials available from a variety of sources. No college courses are required unless the certification candidate chooses to participate in them for preparation purposes.

The cost of the Passport to Teaching program is just $500.  Candidates can complete the program with four solid months of study. Most candidates complete the program in six to nine months and everyone completes the program within one year.  Additional college courses are not required unless the certification candidate chooses to participate in them for preparation purposes.
