American Board Heralds its Inaugural Class of Certified Teachers in Idaho and Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON, DC (June 29, 2004) — In its continuing effort to increase the supply of qualified teachers in U.S. schools, the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (American Board) today announced that 11 candidates have earned the Passport to TeachingSM certification and are qualified to teach in Idaho, Florida and Pennsylvania’s classrooms. This alternative route to full certification helps meet the requirements set by the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 to place a “highly qualified” teacher in every classroom by the 2005-06 school year.

“At a crucial time for our educational system, students and parents in both states will benefit from the leadership and experience offered by these qualified teachers,” said Kathleen Madigan, president of the American Board. “These outstanding individuals have demonstrated the talent and instructional capabilities necessary to impact student learning and achievement. The American Board is honored to be a source for offering new and existing teachers another pathway to the classroom and welcomes working with the states to place these certified teachers in public schools.”

Targeting mid-career changers, recent college graduates and teachers seeking certification, Passport to Teaching offers computer-based assessments in subject area and professional teaching knowledge. All candidates for Passport to Teaching certification must hold a bachelor’s degree, complete a criminal background check, and meet American Board standards by passing the professional teaching knowledge and subject area knowledge examinations. Teachers earning American Board certification will be able to transfer their credentials easily among the states that adopt the American Board. Currently, Pennsylvania, Idaho and Florida have approved the American Board program.

“Having completed the American Board program and the additional requirements as set forth by the state of Idaho, I consider myself well prepared to meet the teaching challenges that lie ahead,” stated Charlotte Kendall, a resident of Moscow, ID. “The American Board program allows qualified individuals to take advantage of teaching in their area of expertise, utilizing their considerable knowledge and life experiences. I consider this program a viable alternative for those who are drawn to a career in teaching and I fully encourage others like me to explore the possibilities.”   “I am interested in teaching because I want to be able to help children and be a positive influence on students, said Donna Moren, a resident of Erie, PA. I want to be able to compile the best curriculum for my students that will help them later in life. “
