Mr. Mesecar is responsible for growing and diversifying business opportunities with third party contracts for Sylvan Learning. The position sits at the intersection of policy, business and education and is a tremendous opportunity to bring Sylvan’s proven approach to more students, particularly disadvantaged ones.
Previously, Mr. Mesecar was in charge of the editorial, marketing and sales efforts for Scholastic’s suite of math products. Mesecar developed Scholastic’s long-term math strategy and new product development.
Mr. Mesecar joined Scholastic from the U.S. Department of Education, where he served as Assistant Deputy Secretary, Office of Innovation and Improvement. He also served in the Department as Acting Assistant Secretary, Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development, and was previously deputy chief of staff at the Department. Dedicated to supporting innovation in education, Mr. Mesecar led the Department’s efforts to make strategic investments in promising educational practices and oversaw the administration of over 28 grant programs related to education improvement, school choice, teacher quality and technology.
Mr. Mesecar has had a life-long commitment to education. Mesecar was on the Professional Staff of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce as the panel wrote the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002. Prior to his work in Washington, Mesecar taught the fifth grade at Witt Elementary School in Jefferson County, CO.
