Sonya Lorena Sanchez

With more than 20 years of experience in the communications field, Sonya Lorena Sanchez has served one United States President, three US Secretaries of Education, three State Attorney Generals, the media, and Corporate America.

Sanchez received her Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and immediately began working in television, trying her hand as a reporter, producer, anchor, photographer and video editor. She quickly moved up the career ladder from television, to several administrative positions within government. She served as public information officer and deputy press secretary for city, state and national office holders from Texas to New York to Washington D.C. She served as a spokesperson writing press releases, setting up press conferences, and doing interviews for local, national and international television, radio and print media. She also worked with Manhattan’s public relations executives. Each position prepared her for the next, and each step in her career gave her the ability to continue growing.

In 2006, Sanchez returned to Laredo, Texas to care for her parents. Her varied skills soon found her trying a related area of communications, as the marketing director of a ten thousand seat arena, the Laredo Entertainment Center. She assisted top entertainment groups such as Feld, Disney, WWE and Live Nation with advertisement layouts and purchases, press releases, and all marketing and publicity related to the shows. She also helped to create and design the arena’s new logo, website, advertisements, and slogans, such as “Hot Days; Hotter Nights”.

In 2009, with a career coming full circle, back in her hometown, where she attended public schools as a child, Sanchez took a job teaching in Laredo’s prestigious communications and fine arts magnet school, Vidal Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts. She quickly became an alternatively certified teacher focusing on her specialty, broadcast journalism. For Sanchez, her two most important career highlights thus far include being on the front lines promoting No Child Left Behind for the U.S. Department of Education and President Bush and working for the Attorney General of Texas during a multi-million dollar lawsuit and settlement with “big tobacco”.
