Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Announces Teacher Recruitment Campaign

WASHINGTON, DC (June 14, 2006)– The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) will host “Become a Teacher” information sessions for individuals interested in becoming teachers in DJJ educational facilities.

At the “Become a Teacher” events, career changers can participate in informational presentations and meet with ABCTE certification counselors and to learn more about earning a teaching certificate.  Representatives from DJJ will be available to provide information about teaching in their educational facilities. The events are free, and individuals can register to attend at www.abcte.org/events.

There are approximately 50,000 students enrolled in DJJ educational facilities.  “The education of the youth in our care is a top priority of our department, and is paramount to their success upon release,” said Anthony J. Schembri, Secretary for the Department of Juvenile Justice.  

“We are excited that this partnership will bring in a pool of talented career changers who have the motivation to become a teacher in a Florida Department of Juvenile Justice education facility,” said ABCTE president David W. Saba.  

America needs millions of new teachers over the next decade, and the American Board is working hard to encourage more talented professionals to pursue teaching. The American Board’s Passport to Teaching program is a premier national certification option, considered a breakthrough solution for highly knowledgeable career changers.

Individuals with bachelor’s degrees can earn ABCTE’s Passport to Teaching certification by demonstrating mastery on subject area and professional teaching knowledge examinations and passing a federal background check.  

ABCTE’s Passport to Teaching certification is a route to state certification in Florida.  Individuals who utilize Passport to Teaching to earn their certification are recognized as highly qualified according to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
