Pennsylvania Grants Initial Program Approval to ABCTE’s Secondary Level General Science & Physics Teacher Certification Program

Decision Expands ABCTE’s Teacher Certification Program In Pennsylvania Washington, DC (March 17, 2011) —

On Tuesday, March 8, 2011, the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) received confirmation from the Pennsylvania Department of Education of the approval of the ABCTE secondary level general science and secondary level physics teacher certification programs. The approval process included an independent review coordinated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The review concluded that the ABCTE secondary level general science and secondary level physics programs meet the Program Specific State Standards in all areas.

The ABCTE teacher certification has been available in Pennsylvania in the areas of English language arts, mathematics and elementary education since 2002. Since then, ABCTE has recruited over 800 new potential teachers and has certified over 200 ABCTE teachers in Pennsylvania. “With an increasing focus across the country on the STEM subject areas, we are looking forward to working with the state to expand the availability of our program to the areas of general science and physics,” said Shawn McCollough, ABCTE Chief Executive Officer.

ABCTE The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) is a non-profit organization, dedicated to recruiting, preparing, certifying and supporting dedicated professionals to improve student achievement through quality teaching. ABCTE offers an innovative teacher preparation and certification program for highly knowledgeable individuals who want to change careers and become teachers.

A bachelor’s degree is required for acceptance into the program and participants must pass a background check before earning their certification. Candidates enrolled in the program must demonstrate mastery on rigorous examinations that cover both professional teaching knowledge and subject area knowledge. Done almost entirely online, the program gives candidates the flexibility to work towards earning their certification on their own time, with the average candidate taking 8 to 10 months to complete the program. Once in the classroom, candidates will need to complete a state-approved mentoring program during their first year of teaching through Point Park University.
