REQUIREMENTS TO EARN YOUR CERTIFICATION

In order to earn an ABCTE certification in General Science, you will need to meet the following requirements:

1. Hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher.

2. Submit your official college or university transcripts to ABCTE.

3. Pass a national background check.

4. Pass the Professional Teaching Knowledge exam (PTK). This exam will be taken on a computer and must be completed at a Pearson VUE testing center. The exam will consist of 100 multiple choice questions and a writing component. We suggest you take this exam before your subject area exam.

5. Pass the ABCTE General Science exam. This exam will be taken on a computer and must be completed at a Pearson VUE testing center. We suggest taking this exam after you complete your PTK exam.

THE AMERICAN BOARD CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The American Board General Science Plus certification program includes the following:

*The state of Arkansas requires anyone with a General Science certification to also take the Middle Grades Science Praxis II exam. Information on the exam can be found here.

**In Idaho, candidates who are seeking a Natural Science endorsement must choose biology, physics, or chemistry on their ABCTE application and pass that selected single subject science assessment in addition to ABCTE general science assessment and PTK assessment.  Candidates are advised to take the ABCTE single-subject science exam and the PTK before taking the ABCTE general science assessment in order to obtain a natural science endorsement. Idaho candidates will not be able to teach on a natural science endorsement alone; the endorsement must be in addition to a single-subject science certificate. Call us at 1-877-669-2228 for more information.

***To teach physics, you will be required to complete a separate certification program, also offered by the American Board. A physics certification is not required to teach any other sciences, meaning you can just take the physics certification without the general science certification if you would only like to teach physics.
